With the Kindle version I use it on iPad next to my laptop , it's just a flat screen, of course, and the in-text references are links that easily pop back and forth.
If you need to carry the "missing manual" around with you, by all means get the Kindle version. Since the online guides for Filemaker are not so good, I was hoping this would have basic information, but it's almost like I need a basic book to understand this one.
I'll keep hacking away. I use Access, and am actually a Mac person, so I was hoping Filemaker would be easier This manual is very useful for people new to FM Pro and veterans, like me. I have their missing manual for FM Pro 8, and this one goes well beyond that earlier effort.
Bravo It is much better than other FM Pro manuals in my opinion. I am an experienced FileMaker user current release is version This book sits on my reference shelf. This book is not, and is not meant to be, a tutorial for a beginning FileMaker user. These folks should look elsewhere for their FileMaker tutorials.
The fact that this book is for Filemaker Pro 14 and we are currently at FileMaker 15 make no practical difference to me.
The differences between 14 and 15 are so minor that the value of the book as a reference is not degraded. I have argued elsewhere that calling the latest FileMaker release a version 15 was marketing hype. The differences are so subtle that the release should have been a free upgrade to Also missing coherence and cogent discussion.
Lots and I mean lots of white space to make the text more noticeable. Which then brings one to the choice of font faces sans serif and overall layout. Apparently O'Reilly hires squirrels to do the type setting and layout design because I have difficulty believing humans could be responsible for this abomination. As to the content, well, it's as bad as the font face selection and layout. And as another poor soul who purchased this product noted, File Maker is probably one of the worst database programs on the planet.
But it runs on a Mac, and I have no choice but to support a lab full of them. Indeed, I am placing O'Reilly on my personal blacklist as a result of this purchase. One person found this helpful. Great resource - waiting on the newest version. Like most of the Missing manual books this is a good reference to the FM Of course I buy it and they come out with FM 15 a few weeks later. Jack of all trades master of none. Maybe mythical "intermediate level" people. Technical manuals should be either encyclopaedic or training material, not sure there was ever a market for long-winded prattle or jaunty humour in technical manuals. The endless clicking and scrolling has been replaced with quick and efficient composing and editing from the keyboard.
Extensive use of predictive type suggests functions as you start to type them. Better still, it offers to fill in the names of your fields as you start to type them, too. These non-printing parts remain anchored to the top and bottom of the FileMaker window regardless of how much scrolling takes place in between. The text appears when the field is empty, but disappears as soon as some information has been entered.
